Come on in...the water's fine....

Ask anyone who's ever been here, and they'll tell you there's something special about the waters around the Florida Keys.   The Florida Keys are home to the third longest coral reef system in the world, and the only living reef system in North America.  Here are some more "insider" tidbits:
  • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo was the first underwater park in the world.
  • Key Largo, which bills itself as the Dive Capital of the World, is also the home to this country's first undersea hotel, Jules Undersea Lodge.
  • In addition to our natural reef system, the Florida Keys are home to numerous artificial reefs.  Two of the largest artificial reefs in the world are found in the Keys:  the Spiegel Grove (off Key Largo) and the Vandenberg (off Key West).
You can book a dive trip through any dive shop in the Keys.  Dive trips are generally available as either half-day or full-day excursions.  You must have a valid certification in order to scuba dive.  Want to learn to dive?  Many dive shops offer certification courses that can have you diving in one weekend.
